Recent court rulings have solidified expectations that Virginia will conduct its 2026 midterm elections using the congressional districts enacted after the 2020 census. The state Supreme Court struck down a voter-approved constitutional amendment on May 8 that would have authorized mid-decade redistricting and a new Democratic-leaning map. The U.S. Supreme Court then rejected an emergency appeal on May 15, leaving the existing lines in place. Governor Abigail Spanberger confirmed that the May 12 statutory deadline for changes has passed without a replacement map, and no further legislative or judicial action remains available before November. These procedural barriers have produced the strong trader consensus against any new map taking effect.
