A selection process is currently being held to choose the next Secretary-General of the United Nations, with the current term set to end on 31 December 2026. This market will resolve to the individual who is formally appointed as Secretary-General of the United Nations following the 2026 United Nations Secretary-General selection. To count for resolution, the individual must be formally appointed as Secretary-General of the United Nations following the 2026 United Nations Secretary-General selection. A recommendation by the United Nations Security Council alone will not be sufficient for resolution. Any interim or caretaker Secretary-General will not count toward the resolution of this market. If no such Secretary-General is appointed by June 30, 2027, 11:59 PM ET, this market will resolve to “Other”. The primary resolution source for this market will be official information from the United Nations; however, a consensus of credible reporting may also be used.Rafael Grossi holds the lead in trader consensus for the next United Nations Secretary-General position, reflecting his established record as IAEA Director General and sustained engagement with the five permanent Security Council members on nuclear diplomacy and conflicts including Ukraine and Iran. Recent interactive dialogues in April allowed all four nominees to outline priorities before member states and civil society, yet Grossi’s visibility and perceived acceptability among veto-wielding powers continue to shape assessments ahead of closed Security Council discussions expected later this summer. Rebeca Grynspan’s standing draws from her UN system experience and recent decision to step away from her UNCTAD role in line with General Assembly guidance, while Michelle Bachelet and Macky Sall face narrower paths tied to regional endorsements and potential opposition within the permanent five. The process remains open to additional nominations and could shift with evolving diplomatic alignments before a recommendation and General Assembly vote.
