Recent July CPI data showing a 3.4% year-over-year rate, down from 3.5% in June, anchors trader positioning for the August print, with Cleveland Fed nowcasts at 3.36% reflecting continued moderation in energy and shelter costs. Closely matched probabilities between 3.3% and 3.4% highlight uncertainty around monthly core services rebounding versus persistent tariff pass-through and goods-price pressures. Market-implied odds price in a narrow range consistent with consensus forecasts of 0.2% monthly headline gains, while acknowledging risks from labor-market tightness and fiscal expansion that could sustain readings above 3.5%. The September 11 release will resolve the market, with any surprise deviation likely tied to gasoline or housing components.
