The Black Ball has emerged as the clear frontrunner in the Oscars 2027 Best International Feature Film market, with its 79% implied probability driven by Spain’s official selection on September 16 following a Cannes Best Director win and strong festival momentum at Telluride and Toronto. The Netflix-backed queer epic spanning generations of gay men in war-torn Spain benefits from critical acclaim, star power including Penélope Cruz and Glenn Close, and an ambitious awards campaign positioned for potential cross-category recognition. A broad field of contenders, including Palme d’Or winner Fjord, previous Oscar winner Pawel Pawlikowski’s Fatherland, and submissions like Possible Love and All of a Sudden, trails amid early-cycle uncertainty. The Academy shortlist arrives December 15, with nominees set for January 21 and the ceremony on March 14, 2027.
