Israel's formal recognition of Somaliland as a sovereign state in December 2025 marked a historic breakthrough after over three decades of de facto independence, yet no additional UN member has followed suit amid sustained opposition from Somalia, the African Union, IGAD, and the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, which view it as a violation of Somalia's territorial integrity. Recent reports from early May 2026 indicate UAE diplomatic efforts targeting Eswatini, Argentina, Zambia, and the Dominican Republic for potential recognition, alongside ongoing US lobbying and Ethiopia's pre-existing MoU on port access, but lack of official announcements or breakthroughs has kept trader consensus skeptical. With no scheduled diplomatic summits or votes before June 30, markets imply a 72% probability against further recognitions, reflecting geopolitical caution in the Horn of Africa.
