**Trader consensus heavily favors "No" at 96% because magnitude 9.0+ earthquakes are exceptionally rare on human timescales.** Historical records show these megathrust events occur globally roughly once every 25–50 years on average, with only a handful documented since 1900. With just over three months remaining until 2027 and no M9+ events recorded in 2025–2026, the implied probability aligns with long-term frequency data from USGS and paleoseismic studies. Current global seismicity shows typical rates of M7–8 events but no indicators of the sustained strain release needed for a 9.0+ rupture on major subduction zones. While forecasting remains uncertain and sudden model shifts or unmonitored fault behavior could theoretically trigger one, the short window and absence of precursors reinforce the strong market-implied odds against occurrence before year-end.

The resolution source for this market is the United States Geological Survey (USGS) Earthquake Hazards Program (https://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/browse/significant.php#sigdef).
If an earthquake of substantial size has occurred within this market's timeframe but not yet appeared on the resolution source, this market may remain open until January 31, 2027, 11:59 PM ET, or until the earthquake in question otherwise appears on the resolution source. If such an earthquake has not appeared on the resolution source by that date, another credible resolution source will be used.
After a qualifying earthquake is registered, this market will remain open for 24 hours to account for any revisions to its recorded magnitude. After 24 hours, this market will resolve according to the latest provided data.
