Recent moderation in U.S. manufacturing expansion after July's 55.6 peak—the strongest since 2022—shapes trader positioning for the September 2026 ISM Manufacturing PMI, with August's 54.6 reading reflecting slower new orders (53.7) and backlogs amid elevated input prices (71.1) tied to tariffs and Middle East supply strains. Production remains robust at 58.3 while employment and inventories signal continued but cooling growth above the 50 expansion threshold for an eighth straight month. Low customer inventories and resilient output support a base case near recent levels, yet geopolitical and policy risks introduce volatility that aligns with the closely matched market-implied probabilities across 50–58 ranges. The October 1 release will incorporate September survey responses and any further shifts in demand or cost pressures.
