Recent July CPI data at 0.5% year-on-year, below consensus, reflected ongoing weakness in food prices from ample pork supplies and subdued domestic consumption alongside softer non-food gains tied to lower transport and energy costs. Traders price the August print in a narrow band around 0.5-0.8% because these demand-side pressures and favorable base effects show little sign of rapid reversal ahead of the early-September release. Core inflation near 0.9% and moderating producer prices further anchor expectations in that range, while any pickup in services or stabilization in global commodities could shift odds toward the higher bucket. Persistent soft retail sales and housing indicators keep downside risks alive for sub-0.5% outcomes.
