Traders assign nearly identical probabilities to the 52.0–54.9 and 55.0–57.9 brackets for the preliminary August University of Michigan Consumer Sentiment index, reflecting uncertainty over whether the July rebound to a final 55.2 will hold after the sharp June drop to 49.5. The July gain stemmed from lower gasoline prices following the US-Iran ceasefire, which eased year-ahead inflation expectations to 4.2 percent and lifted readings across demographic groups, yet the index remains well below year-ago levels amid persistent price-level concerns. Recent June CPI data showing headline inflation easing to 3.5 percent and core at 2.6 percent provide some support, but mixed labor-market signals and the upcoming July CPI release on August 12 introduce potential volatility ahead of the August 14 survey close. This tight pricing underscores contested views on whether near-term macro relief can outweigh lingering inflation fatigue in early-August responses.
