Recent July 2026 CPI data showed headline inflation easing to 3.4% year-over-year from 3.5% in June, with core at 2.5%, aligning with expectations and supported by moderating energy prices and shelter costs. Cleveland Fed nowcasts for August 2026 point to a similar 3.36% headline reading amid stable monthly price gains of around 0.2-0.3%. Trader positioning around the 3.3-3.4% outcomes reflects uncertainty over persistent shelter contributions, potential tariff pass-through effects, and fiscal stimulus impacts that could offset disinflationary trends in energy and goods. Key upcoming catalysts include August labor market data and the September 11 CPI release, with market-implied odds capturing aggregated bets on whether cooling momentum holds or sticky components reassert upward pressure on the annual rate.
