Recent July 2026 CPI data, which printed at 3.4% year-over-year as expected with a 0.1% monthly rise, anchors trader positioning for the August annual rate. Moderating energy prices, including a decline in gasoline, and cooling shelter costs have supported the recent downtrend from 3.5% in June, though core CPI held near 2.5% amid persistent service pressures. Elevated geopolitical risks from Middle East tensions and lingering tariff pass-through effects introduce upside risks that keep 3.4% and 3.3% nearly tied in market-implied odds. Key upcoming catalysts include August CPI components on food, energy, and housing, alongside labor market and consumer inflation expectation data that could shift the balance between further moderation and stabilization near current levels.
