The 2026 Saxony-Anhalt Landtag election on September 6 produced a sharp drop in CDU support to 17.2% of the vote, yielding 15 seats in the 83-seat parliament after the party had held 40 seats on 37.1% five years earlier. Late polling from Infratest dimap, Forschungsgruppe Wahlen, and INSA consistently projected CDU results between 22% and 24%, translating to seat totals well below 17 once the 5% threshold and seat allocation formula were applied. Voter migration toward the AfD, which reached 43.8% and 39 seats, combined with stable or modest shares for the Left, SPD, and Greens, drove the outcome amid dissatisfaction with the prior CDU-SPD-FDP coalition. Final certification or minor adjustments from remaining counts could theoretically push CDU above 16 seats, though current tallies make this improbable.
