This market will resolve to "Yes" if the United States formally recognizes the Republic of Somaliland as a sovereign state by December 31, 2026, 11:59 PM ET. Otherwise, this market will resolve to "No". Only formal recognition of Somaliland will qualify. Statements/actions which acknowledge the Republic of Somaliland, or change its diplomatic status with the U.S. but do not formally recognize the country as a sovereign state will not qualify. The primary resolution source for this market will be official information from the government of the United States, however a consensus of credible reporting will also be used.Trump has directly stated he will not pursue US recognition of Somaliland, most notably in December 2025 when asked following Israel's recognition of the breakaway territory. The State Department has consistently reaffirmed the longstanding "One Somalia" policy upholding Somalia's territorial integrity, including in a June 2026 report that analysts viewed as further closing off the possibility. While Senator Ted Cruz and some foreign policy commentators have urged recognition to advance counterterrorism cooperation, secure mineral access, or establish military basing, these calls have not altered administration positions. Somaliland has offered incentives such as exclusive mineral rights, yet no formal diplomatic shift or legislative action has advanced the issue ahead of the 2027 deadline. Trader consensus reflects the absence of any concrete policy movement or presidential intent.
