Recent July CPI data showing a soft 0.1% month-over-month headline increase and 0.2% core rise, driven largely by a 1.5% drop in energy prices, has left traders focused on potential normalization for August. Cleveland Fed nowcasts currently point to a 0.35% headline MoM print, reflecting expectations of rebounding goods prices and steady shelter components amid still-elevated annual rates near 3.4%. With the August CPI release scheduled for September 11, market-implied odds cluster tightly between 0.3% and 0.4% as participants weigh volatile energy trends, recent labor-market softening, and the absence of major new data releases that could shift the trajectory. This narrow distribution underscores uncertainty around whether base effects from July's energy decline will fully reverse or if broader disinflationary momentum will keep the figure closer to the prior month's pace.
