The June 2, 2026 primary for Los Angeles County Sheriff produced a runoff between incumbent Robert Luna and predecessor Alex Villanueva, with Luna at roughly 44% and Villanueva near 22% amid a field of eight candidates. No entrant reached a majority, advancing the 2022 rematch to the November 3 general election under California's top-two system. Traders assign both finalists comparable implied probabilities near 44%, reflecting the race's competitiveness driven by voter divides over department leadership, jail management, homelessness responses, immigration enforcement priorities, and budget oversight for the nation's largest sheriff's agency. Other candidates' lower shares split remaining support without altering the matchup. Key variables that could shift sentiment include fundraising totals, endorsements from county supervisors or law enforcement groups, turnout patterns in unincorporated areas and contract cities, and any late developments on internal reforms or scandals before ballots are cast.
