Fed Chair Kevin Warsh’s September 16 press conference follows the FOMC’s policy decision amid August CPI data showing headline inflation at 3.4% year-over-year and core at 2.4%, exceeding forecasts, alongside oil prices above $100 per barrel from geopolitical supply shocks. Markets have priced in an 85-92% implied probability of a 25-basis-point hike to the 3.75-4.00% federal funds target range, testing Warsh’s Jackson Hole emphasis on needing “clear and sufficient speed” toward the 2% target before easing vigilance. Traders will scrutinize his reaction function explanation, references to financial conditions including 10-year Treasury yields near 5%, and any signals on further tightening, following July’s communications volatility that lifted long-term yields. The session also occurs against administration pressure for lower rates ahead of midterms.
