Rafael Grossi holds the lead in trader consensus for the next United Nations Secretary-General position, reflecting his established record as IAEA Director General and sustained engagement with the five permanent Security Council members on nuclear diplomacy and conflicts including Ukraine and Iran. Recent interactive dialogues in April allowed all four nominees to outline priorities before member states and civil society, yet Grossi’s visibility and perceived acceptability among veto-wielding powers continue to shape assessments ahead of closed Security Council discussions expected later this summer. Rebeca Grynspan’s standing draws from her UN system experience and recent decision to step away from her UNCTAD role in line with General Assembly guidance, while Michelle Bachelet and Macky Sall face narrower paths tied to regional endorsements and potential opposition within the permanent five. The process remains open to additional nominations and could shift with evolving diplomatic alignments before a recommendation and General Assembly vote.
