The University of Michigan Consumer Sentiment final for August 2026 prints at 51.7, confirming the preliminary 51.0 reading and aligning with forecaster consensus near 51.0 after a 6% month-over-month decline from July’s 55.2. Persistent inflation concerns, including year-ahead expectations at 4.0% and gasoline price pressures tied to geopolitical tensions, combined with weakening one-year and five-year business outlooks, have anchored trader positioning in the 49.0–51.9 band. The survey’s methodology produces only modest final revisions relative to the mid-month preliminary, reinforcing the near-certain market-implied odds. A material shift outside this range would require an unusually large revision or unexpected data release, scenarios with limited historical precedent.
