USGS data shows no magnitude 7.0 or higher earthquakes worldwide since the M7.4 event 100 km east-northeast of Miyako, Japan, on April 20—now 24 days without another major rupture along global tectonic boundaries. This quiet period aligns with the typical Poisson-distributed pattern of such events, averaging 15–20 annually or roughly one every 18–24 days, with five recorded year-to-date through mid-May, on pace with historical norms. Trader consensus reflects this statistical baseline amid inherent short-term unpredictability, as no reliable precursors like foreshocks or seismic swarms signal imminent activity. Continuous real-time monitoring by the USGS global seismograph network provides immediate detection; resolution hinges on final magnitudes listed on their significant earthquakes page, with potential 24-hour holds for revisions.

The resolution source for this market is the United States Geological Survey (USGS) Earthquake Hazards Program (https://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/browse/significant.php#sigdef).
If an earthquake of substantial size has occurred within this market's timeframe but not yet appeared on the resolution source, this market may remain open until the end of the month following resolution time or until the earthquake in question otherwise appears on the resolution source. If such an earthquake has not appeared on the resolution source by that date, another credible resolution source will be used.
After a qualifying earthquake is registered, this market will remain open for 24 hours to account for any revisions to its recorded magnitude. After 24 hours, this market will resolve according to the latest provided data.
