Recent July CPI data for China, which eased to 0.5% year-on-year—below consensus forecasts—due to falling food prices and softer non-food inflation amid tepid domestic demand, has kept trader expectations for August anchored near similar subdued levels. Persistent weakness in consumer spending, ample supply pushing down pork and other food costs, and moderating core readings continue to weigh on the outlook, while base effects and any commodity price shifts introduce uncertainty ahead of the early-September release. The close contest between the 0.5-0.6% and 0.7-0.8% brackets reflects balanced views on whether demand stabilization or further softening will dominate, with stronger retail sales or producer price spillovers potentially lifting readings and additional demand weakness reinforcing the lower range.
