Recent Canadian CPI data showing headline inflation steady at 3.0% year-over-year through August 2026, driven by elevated but slightly moderating gasoline prices amid Middle East supply disruptions, underpin the tight contest between the 2.5–2.9% and 3.0–3.4% annual average bands. Core measures tracked by the Bank of Canada, including CPI-trim and CPI-median near 2.0%, remain contained, while food price growth has cooled below the headline and shelter components show modest upward pressure from rents. Trader positioning reflects uncertainty over whether geopolitical energy risks and potential U.S. tariffs sustain readings near 3% or allow easing toward the 2.5% area as base effects and monetary policy transmission play out. Upcoming monthly releases and Bank of Canada communications will likely influence shifts between these leading outcomes.
