Trader consensus favoring no 9.0+ earthquake before 2027 draws primarily from the extreme rarity of such events, with USGS data showing only five recorded globally since 1950 and none since Japan's 2011 Tohoku quake. Recent monitoring reveals peak activity at magnitude 8.8 in Kamchatka during 2025 and several 7.4–7.8 events in 2026, consistent with typical subduction-zone clustering rather than escalation toward megathrust thresholds. Historical recurrence intervals of 25–50 years on average, combined with the brief remaining window through December 2026, reinforce the market-implied 92.8% probability for "No." While sudden model shifts or undetected strain accumulation along major faults like Cascadia or Nankai could alter outcomes, current seismic catalogs and absence of foreshock patterns support sustained trader conviction in favor of the lower-magnitude regime.

The resolution source for this market is the United States Geological Survey (USGS) Earthquake Hazards Program (https://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/browse/significant.php#sigdef).
If an earthquake of substantial size has occurred within this market's timeframe but not yet appeared on the resolution source, this market may remain open until January 31, 2027, 11:59 PM ET, or until the earthquake in question otherwise appears on the resolution source. If such an earthquake has not appeared on the resolution source by that date, another credible resolution source will be used.
After a qualifying earthquake is registered, this market will remain open for 24 hours to account for any revisions to its recorded magnitude. After 24 hours, this market will resolve according to the latest provided data.
