The low historical frequency of Category 5 landfalls in the contiguous United States, combined with current Atlantic conditions in August 2026, underpins the market-implied 88.5% odds against occurrence before 2027. On the Saffir-Simpson scale, sustained winds must exceed 157 mph at landfall—a threshold met only a handful of times in the past century due to requirements for low wind shear, high ocean heat content, and favorable steering. NOAA's seasonal outlook and early model consensus point to near-normal activity through November, with no active systems currently positioned for rapid intensification toward the U.S. coast. Peak-season updates from the National Hurricane Center will provide the next key data points for traders assessing remaining risk.
