Global seismic activity remains elevated in 2026 following four magnitude 7.0+ events recorded by the USGS through late April, including a 7.5 offshore Tonga in March and 7.4 events near Indonesia and Japan in April. These occurred primarily along Pacific subduction zones where tectonic plate convergence drives recurrent large quakes. No additional M7+ events have been confirmed in May, consistent with the typical clustering pattern after major releases. The USGS Earthquake Hazards Program continues real-time monitoring via global networks, with new data releases available daily; traders should watch for updates from active regions like the Solomon Islands or Alaska Peninsula, where aftershock sequences or new mainshocks could push totals higher before year-end. Historical averages indicate roughly 15–20 such events annually worldwide, underscoring the uncertainty in short-term forecasts.

The resolution source for this market is the United States Geological Survey (USGS) Earthquake Hazards Program (https://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/browse/significant.php#sigdef).
If an earthquake of substantial size has occurred within this market's timeframe but not yet appeared on the resolution source, this market may remain open until the end of the month following resolution time or until the earthquake in question otherwise appears on the resolution source. If such an earthquake has not appeared on the resolution source by that date, another credible resolution source will be used.
After a qualifying earthquake is registered, this market will remain open for 24 hours to account for any revisions to its recorded magnitude. After 24 hours, this market will resolve according to the latest provided data.
