Iran’s next regularly scheduled presidential election remains set for 2028 under the four-year term established after Masoud Pezeshkian’s 2024 victory. Early contests require formal triggers such as the president’s death, resignation, or incapacity, or a decision by the Supreme Leader and Guardian Council. The February 2026 assassination of Ali Khamenei and subsequent March selection of Mojtaba Khamenei by the Assembly of Experts produced rapid leadership continuity without any parallel move to shorten the presidential timeline. Recent political reporting indicates no active legislative or institutional push to advance the vote, keeping the probability of an election before late 2026 or 2027 low in trader assessments. Key variables to monitor include any future health developments affecting the president or new supreme leader, major domestic unrest, or shifts in Assembly of Experts guidance on electoral timing.
