The Trump administration notified Congress in February 2026 of plans for a phased resumption of U.S. Embassy operations in Damascus, which closed in 2012 amid the Syrian civil war, with initial spending authorized shortly afterward. This followed the December 2024 fall of Bashar al-Assad, sanctions relief, Syria’s removal from the U.S. list of state sponsors of terrorism in August 2026, and high-level engagement including President Trump’s meetings with Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa. U.S. Special Envoy Tom Barrack raised the flag at the ambassador’s residence in May 2025, signaling warming ties, though full operational reopening with personnel has not occurred. Several European countries, including Denmark, have reopened resident embassies since 2025, providing a benchmark for normalization timelines amid ongoing security and logistical considerations.
