Recent July 2026 CPI data, showing a 0.1% monthly headline rise and 3.4% year-over-year rate alongside 0.2% core growth, anchors trader expectations for August amid a rebound from June's -0.4% decline. Market-implied odds reflect close contesting between 0.3% and 0.4% prints, driven by potential normalization in shelter costs, food prices, and energy components following gasoline declines. Persistent influences include lagged tariff effects, labor market tightness, and fiscal dynamics that could sustain modest upward pressure, while productivity gains and housing trends offer counterbalance. The August CPI release, due in mid-September, will hinge on these variables and any fresh volatility in commodity benchmarks.
