Robert Abela holds a commanding lead in the race for Malta’s next prime minister following his decision to call a snap general election for May 30. Recent surveys show the Labour Party leader maintaining a double-digit advantage over Nationalist opponent Alex Borg, bolstered by strong support among the party’s 2022 voters and the structural benefits of incumbency. Traders view these factors, combined with Labour’s consistent polling edge on key issues such as energy costs and stability amid regional tensions, as decisive for securing a fourth consecutive term. While Abela’s position appears secure, a late surge in turnout for the opposition or unforeseen campaign developments could still narrow the margin before election day.
