Recent energy price surges and ongoing trade tensions have driven the University of Michigan Consumer Sentiment index to a preliminary 47.8 reading for September 2026, down sharply from 51.7 in August and aligning closely with the market's leading 46.0–48.9 range at 74% implied probability. One-year inflation expectations jumped to 4.6%, the highest since June, amid gasoline prices rising over 27% year-over-year and broader concerns about household purchasing power. Declines in both current conditions and expectations components reflect persistent uncertainty from geopolitical factors and policy developments, even as the underlying labor market remains relatively stable. This positions the outcome well within the dominant probability band while highlighting sensitivity to near-term inflation data releases.
