Recent national polls show Lula leading Flávio Bolsonaro by 5–13 points ahead of the October 4 first round, yet Rio de Janeiro state remains closely contested because Bolsonaro serves as a senator from the state and draws concentrated support among conservative voters there. Campaign launches in mid-August, with both frontrunners returning to political strongholds, have reinforced this divide without shifting statewide preferences. Lower-polling candidates such as Ronaldo Caiado, Pablo Marçal, and Zema split the remainder, keeping any single leader below a decisive margin. Upcoming debates scheduled for late August and September, along with state-specific turnout patterns and late endorsements, could widen the gap by clarifying voter priorities on economic policy, security, and the Bolsonaro family legacy. Trader consensus reflects this persistent uncertainty in the key battleground.
