Recent sharp declines in the University of Michigan Consumer Sentiment index reflect elevated energy costs and geopolitical pressures. The preliminary September 2026 reading fell to 47.8 from 51.7 in August, driven by a resurgence in gasoline prices and ongoing trade tensions that pushed one-year inflation expectations to 4.6%, the highest since June. Expectations for personal finances and business conditions deteriorated markedly, with the expectations sub-index dropping 11.1% month-over-month. Market-implied odds heavily favor the 46.0–48.9 range ahead of the final September release on September 25, consistent with the preliminary print and sustained affordability concerns amid broader uncertainty over monetary policy and consumer spending.
