Recent soft consumer price data have anchored trader expectations for China's 2026 annual inflation near the lower end of the 0.6-1.0% range. The July 2026 CPI reading of 0.5% year-on-year, the weakest in several months and below consensus, reflected ongoing declines in food prices, particularly pork amid ample supply, alongside slower non-food gains tied to subdued domestic demand and retreating global energy costs. Earlier monthly prints around 1.0-1.2% and institutional forecasts near 1% support this positioning, while producer price moderation and tepid retail sales limit upward risks. Any sustained pickup would require stronger consumption stimulus or commodity rebounds, scenarios traders currently assign lower probability.
