This decline, the second consecutive drop and near record lows, reflects plunging expectations for personal finances and business conditions amid elevated fuel costs, with broad-based weakness across political affiliations. Stable labor conditions, including an unemployment rate near 4.1% and August payroll gains of 162,000, have provided limited offset. Trader consensus in the 46.0–48.9 range aligns with these verified pressures, while the final September release later this month remains the key near-term catalyst.
