The National Hurricane Center’s latest Tropical Weather Outlook indicates no tropical cyclone formation is expected across the Atlantic basin through at least the next seven days, reflecting the typical absence of organized disturbances in mid-May. Dry air, stable atmospheric conditions, and the official start of the Atlantic hurricane season on June 1 keep the implied probability of a hurricane forming by May 31 near 98 percent. While a few tropical waves are drifting westward, they lack sufficient moisture and low-level spin for rapid intensification. Forecasters note that any late-May development would require an unusually strong and persistent area of low pressure, an event that has occurred only a handful of times in the historical record. The upcoming NOAA seasonal outlook on May 21 will provide additional context on broader atmospheric patterns but is unlikely to alter the near-term assessment.
