Ongoing gang violence, funding shortfalls, and institutional tensions between Haiti's Provisional Electoral Council and transitional Prime Minister Alix Didier Fils-Aimé's administration have repeatedly disrupted preparations for the scheduled August 30, 2026, first-round presidential and legislative vote. The April 2026 postponement of voter and candidate registration—tied to a new decree requiring alignment with a national political pact and potential referendum—has heightened doubts after prior delays. Fils-Aimé's recent statements questioning whether security conditions permit an August poll, alongside criticism of proposed electoral changes that could complicate party participation, sustain trader consensus that further postponement remains probable before any new government can be installed by early 2027.
