United Russia maintains a commanding lead in the September 2026 State Duma election due to its status as the ruling party backed by extensive administrative resources, a mixed electoral system that favors single-member district control, and Kremlin-aligned institutions that limit genuine opposition. Recent developments include the June party congress featuring Putin’s endorsement and a candidate list incorporating war veterans alongside figures such as Sergei Lavrov and Sergei Sobyanin, alongside an August Supreme Court decision barring the anti-war Yabloko party. State-linked polls from FOM and WCIOM show the party well ahead, while independent surveys indicate softer underlying support and deliberate efforts to suppress turnout. Trader consensus at 98.6% reflects these structural barriers and managed competition. Realistic shifts would require major late developments such as a sharp reversal in the Ukraine conflict or an acute domestic crisis capable of mobilizing unexpected opposition within the narrow remaining window.
