Cameron County’s 2026 judge race tightened after the late-May Democratic primary runoff, where challenger Esteban “Steve” Guerra defeated three-term incumbent Eddie Treviño Jr. by roughly 55% to 45%, securing the nomination. Guerra, former Port of Brownsville board chair, now faces Republican nominee Mauro Garza in the November general election. Cameron County’s strong Democratic voter base normally favors the party nominee, yet traders price both Guerra and Garza near even odds amid limited polling, turnout questions in a non-presidential year, and local economic priorities such as port expansion and job growth that could influence crossover support. No major new developments have emerged since the runoff, leaving the contest dependent on fall campaign momentum, fundraising, and any late shifts in voter sentiment before Election Day.
