Abiy Ahmed’s commanding position in the market stems from his Prosperity Party’s landslide victory in Ethiopia’s June 2026 parliamentary elections, securing 438 of 486 contested seats in the House of Peoples’ Representatives and a clear path to reappointment by the new legislature in October. This outcome reinforced his control over the parliamentary system that selects the prime minister, building on the party’s prior dominance and limiting viable alternatives among listed contenders. Ongoing insurgencies in Amhara and Oromia, unresolved Tigray tensions, and a newly announced September 2026 opposition alliance of seven groups introduce uncertainty, yet these factors have not shifted trader consensus given the scale of the ruling party’s majority and structural barriers to leadership change before the next electoral cycle.
