Wesley Bell secured the Democratic nomination for Missouri’s 1st congressional district in the August 4 primary, defeating former Rep. Cori Bush by roughly 22 points and advancing as the clear incumbent. The St. Louis-based district has long favored Democratic candidates, with Bell capturing nearly 76 percent in the 2024 general election under similar boundaries. Republican nominee Paul Berry III faces structural headwinds in a constituency that consistently delivers large Democratic margins in federal contests. Nonpartisan rating firms classify the seat as safe or solid Democratic, aligning with trader pricing that assigns overwhelming probability to the Democratic outcome. A Republican victory would require either an unforeseen redistricting shift before November or an unprecedented swing in local turnout and voter behavior that has not materialized in recent cycles.
